Need for This Product
This product was created by leaders in the Plone community responding to a critical need for easy to use, flexible commerce tools that were appropriate for the tools available in Plone today.
Being online costs money, from developing a site to its hosting and maintenance. Web site owners should be able to use the value their site creates (i.e., for its users) to turn the site into a source of revenue. Users should be able to easily add tools for accepting donations or processing payments into relevant portions of their web sites. This would allow users to process credit card payments securely, right through the site, with the ability to set prices or donation levels, gather the user information, and connect with financial processing services for the verification, history, and repeat transaction needs. Users would be able to assign a value to any given piece of content (downloadable file, a "membership", a service, an item for purchase, etc), and a user could select to purchase it.
Every serious web platform has tools for payment processing, but this has been an area that Plone has not yet resolved. With a rapidly growing body of users who are demanding this functionality, we need to make it easy to process simple payments through the site out-of-the-box (ie donations). Additionally, with a fleet of developers ready to make useful tools, we need a general framework for commerce in Plone that enables developers to build products for Plone that involve more sophisticated commerce applications (and not have to reinvent the basic stuff in the process).
Previous attempts at commerce have been "one off" (suited for only a particular client) or in earlier Plone technologies. But with Plone evolving so quickly, there are new tools (e.g. Zope 3/Five) available now. These tools actually change the way we think about creating Plone products.
GetPaid is a product that is a light-weight product that is useful out-of-the-box yet also flexible enough to be customized to advanced use cases.
